Government reforms (1): Financial penalties

financial penaltiesWhat do we already know? While much of the Government’s reforms have targeted employer-friendly solutions to improving the Tribunal system, one proposal has sought to redress the balance. This proposal is that Tribunals impose financial penalties on employers where they breach a worker’s rights and there are “aggravating features”. The penalty will be 50% of any award, with a cap of £5,000, which is halved if paid within 21 days.

What’s new? The Government intends to implement financial penalties in April 2014.
