July 2016 news

anne-marieIt’s July and if you’ve still got energy after this month’s mini heat-wave and excitement of Andy Murray’s second Wimbledon win, then we’ve got more HR/employment news for you before the summer holiday season.  The impact of Brexit on employment law is only in its infancy but the Government has started to make its position known in relation to the status of EU nationals.  We also report on Government steps towards transgender equality and how the ACAS code on disciplinary and grievance procedures will be implemented in practice.

In our case update this month we focus on anti-oral variation clauses in contracts, religious discrimination and wearing of headscarves and a warning against the dismissal of a whistle-blower even in circumstances where the decision maker has no knowledge of the protected disclosure.

What Anne-Marie has been doing recently…

As I am still relatively new to the firm, I have been getting out and about meeting some of our clients. It is really nice to put faces to names particularly in the rather impersonal world of email and I always find it fascinating to actually see the particular office, college, manufacturing site as it makes is so much easier to give relevant and meaningful advice.

We advise a number of senior executives as clients too, and I recently represented a board director during his exit from a major international business. It was especially rewarding to be able to achieve a dignified exit for this client and he wrote to me afterwards about his experiences – which he has allowed me to share:

It was a daunting task ‘taking on’ my employer and Anne-Marie was great at guiding me through the process and helping me to set realistic expectations. Using Menzies Law and Anne-Marie has enabled me to document my grievance at the heart of corporate governance. More than anything else this has ‘set me free’ to fully explore future horizons because at some level my voice has now been heard.

If you are in trouble and need help, feeling that all avenues have been exhausted then I would highly recommend Anne-Marie and Menzies Law. The thing that scares me most of all is I nearly didn’t make that call!’

I am also working on putting together some exciting events for the Autumn.  One is a conference for HR professionals working in the College sector.  The other is a People and Strategy forum for HRD’s and FD’s, where our first topic will be the Gender Pay Gap. We are also putting together our first White Paper on this topic which we are very excited about – if you would like to register your interest please email vikki@menzieslaw.co.uk.
