Menopause in the Workplace

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has published guidance for employers on menopause in the workplace (available here).

The guidance summarises the impact that the menopause symptoms can have on women in the workplace and is designed to help employers create supportive and inclusive workplaces for them.  It clarifies (using helpful ‘explainer videos’) when the menopause might be found to be a disability under the Equality Act 2010 and when (and how) employers should make reasonable adjustments. For example:

  • Providing flexible working arrangements such as flexibility of location and varying shift patterns
  • Providing rest areas and quiet rooms
  • Introducing temperature control measures such as cooling systems or fans for women experiencing hot flushes
  • Relaxing uniform policies; and
  • Providing cooler clothing.

It also sets out the consequences for employers failing to meet its legal obligations.
